The two above were my first attempt at taking structures that I made in SketchUp that were then rendered using Procreate. The titles are word salads from Lovecraft and Borges short stories.

The idea of making a second version of the colosseum evolved into this image. Inspired by archaeology as well as the cyclopian structures of Lovecraft and Borges' library, I imagined an excavated city that blends architecture from Spain, Baltimore and SketchUp. The title comes from the podcast with the sam name.

Baltimore Colosseum (2017-2019)

After sitting with the image I decided to add some characters to the environment. I started thinking about these setting as if they were ancient ruins in the middle of a sprawling city and how real world locations like that draw tourists and therefore the typical tourist poses.

The idea of tourist locations stayed in my head so I began to think about creating some lovecraftian/cyclopian structures around my home of Baltimore. Simultaneously, I am becoming more influenced by work of Renato Nicolodi. All of that and playing with SketchUp led to this drawing. Along the way I become interested in the topic of archaeology which has influenced continuing work.

Library Out of Time

Library out of Time

40x20

This drawing draws inspiration from Borges and HP Lovecraft. The buildings again refer to the Library of Babel while the image of the tourists and Pluto come from The Shadow Out of Time and The Whisperer in the Darkness. I'm beginning to pull away from literal illustration and going to more personal interpretation to achieve my own ends.

Original sketch that the final drawing is based on.
